Vairão
Camino de Santiago stage town on Camino Portugués
Vairão is a small parish in the municipality of Vila do Conde, reached on the first day of the Camino Portugués Central route, roughly 23–25 km north of Porto. Its centrepiece is the Mosteiro de Vairão (Monastery of São Salvador), a former Benedictine convent with over a thousand years of history whose buildings now hold the parish church, a cemetery and a donation-run pilgrim albergue. After a long, largely urban and industrial exit from Porto on cobbles and asphalt, the quiet granite lanes and Vinho Verde vineyards here make a welcome first rest stop before the countryside opens up toward Barcelos.
