Despite its moderate rating, this 27.6 km stage on the Camino del Norte is the hilliest between the two major Asturian cities, accumulating 387 metres of ascent and an equal 388 metres of descent as the route repeatedly climbs and drops through forested ridges and coastal headlands. The transition from Villaviciosa's rural calm to Gijón, the largest city in Asturias, is one of the sharpest contrasts on the Norte. The physical effort is well matched by the reward of a full city's amenities — seafront, restaurants, and accommodation in abundance — at the end of the day.
