Avilés

Camino de Santiago stage town on Camino del Norte

Avilés, an estuary city of about 82,000 people, ends the 25.6 km stage from Gijón. The day climbs over Monte Areo, site of the oldest known necropolis in Asturias and a Neolithic dolmen, then runs for kilometres beside the AS-19 road through Tabaza and Trasona before footbridges carry the arrows along the estuary past the white Centro Niemeyer cultural centre. On Avenida de Cervantes, just before the old town, is the municipal Pedro Solís albergue: open all year, pilgrims only, with a kitchen and laundry. From there pedestrian Calle Rivero leads into one of the best-kept historic centres in Asturias; locals say only Santiago de Compostela has more arcaded streets. Calle Galiana's long 17th-century soportales still keep two kinds of paving, cobbles for cattle and people in wooden clogs, flat slabs for everyone else. In the old fishermen's quarter of Sabugo, the Romanesque Iglesia Vieja (begun in the 13th century) has the 'Mesa de los Mareantes' on its side wall, where medieval seafarers met to plan fishing campaigns. The Franciscan church of San Nicolás de Bari, founded outside the walls in the 13th century, keeps a north portal between Romanesque and Gothic and a Roman-era capital used as its font. Plaza de España and Parque de Ferrera are good places to rest. There is nowhere to buy food between Gijón and Tabaza, so stock up before setting out. The next stage, 29.1 km to Soto de Luiña, has fewer services and includes a short, steep climb out of Salinas.
