Cadavedo
Camino de Santiago stage town on Camino del Norte
Cadavedo (Cadavéu in Asturian) is a village of hórreos, tidy gardens and indiano houses on the high coastal shelf of Valdés, between Cabo Vidio and Cabo Busto. Most pilgrims arrive from Soto de Luiña on the Camín Real de las Ballotas, the coastal option that dips through seven small stream valleys (the 'ballotas') via Novellana, Castañeras, Santa Marina and Ballota; at the río Cabo a stone bridge replaces the medieval 'Pont qui tremble' that pilgrims once feared, with Ballota beach just 120 m away. The historic alternative over the Sierra de las Palancas is wilder, with far more climbing and no services, and is only worth it in clear weather; it rejoins the main route at Villademoros, just past Cadavedo. On the last valley before the village, a 500 m detour leads down to Cadavedo beach. On the clifftop headland of La Garita stands the white-and-blue Ermita de la Regalina, built from 1931 on the initiative of the local priest Galo Antonio Fernández, the Asturian-language poet known as Fernán Coronas, who also founded the romería held here on the last Sunday of August with decorated carts, the Danza Prima and the raffle of alfiladas sweet breads. In 2022 Cadavedo was named Asturias' Pueblo Ejemplar (Exemplary Village). Pilgrims sleep at the small municipal albergue (around a dozen beds) or in local guesthouses; the next day continues on back roads through Villademoros, San Cristóbal and Queruás toward Luarca.
