La Caridad
Camino de Santiago stage town on Camino del Norte
La Caridad (A Caridá) is the capital of the El Franco council in far western Asturias and the penultimate Asturian stop on the Camino del Norte before pilgrims cross the Eo estuary into Galicia at Ribadeo. Its name recalls the charity and hospitality the town historically extended to pilgrims. The compact centre — laid out along the Camino around the church of San Miguel, the old town hall and María Cristina park — mixes traditional Asturian houses with elegant 'Indiano' mansions built by returning emigrants. A municipal pilgrim albergue and private hostels, along with shops, bars and restaurants serving local produce, make it a practical end-of-stage stop.
