Abadín
Camino de Santiago stage town on Camino del Norte
Abadín is the gateway to A Terra Chá, the high inland plateau of Lugo, and the first Terra Chá municipality the Camino del Norte crosses. Pilgrims usually arrive after the stage's long climb out of Mondoñedo — about 16–17 km with roughly 600 m of ascent from the valley floor (around 140 m) up to some 550 m — which marks the definitive farewell to coastal Galicia. The Camino passes the hermitage of San Cosme da Montaña at Galgao, whose façade bears a scallop shell, then reaches Gontán, where the Xunta pilgrim albergue, bars, a pharmacy and a small supermarket are found; Abadín itself lies about half a kilometre further. Local legend says the name comes from a tax-collecting abbot the neighbours mocked as 'abadín' (little abbot). A short detour leads to the Romanesque church of Santa María, with a rose window and coats of arms on its façade.
