O Pedrouzo

Camino de Santiago stage town on Camino FrancésCamino Primitivo

O Pedrouzo is the last overnight stop for most pilgrims on the Camino Francés, Primitivo and Norte, which have all merged by now: it closes the 19.3 km stage from Arzúa and leaves about 20 km to the Praza do Obradoiro. Signs can be confusing — the village belongs to the parish of Arca and is the seat of the municipality of O Pino, so you will see it called Pedrouzo, Arca or Arca do Pino. The waymarked route skirts the town along the N-547, so you leave the arrows to reach the centre, where albergues, pensions, cafés and supermarkets line the main road. The Xunta's public albergue has 126 places, takes no advance bookings and requires a credential. In town, the neoclassical parish church of Santa Eulalia de Arca has an altar wall decorated with a large scallop shell. Next morning you rejoin the Camino via Rúa do Concello and walk through eucalyptus woods to San Antón and Amenal (about 4 km, the first coffee stop; cross the N-547 by the underpass), then around the fence of Santiago airport to San Paio and Lavacolla, whose stream is where medieval pilgrims washed before entering the city. About 15 km in, Monte do Gozo, with its 1993 monument, gives the first view of the cathedral spires. Eat breakfast before leaving, and if you start in the dark, carry a headlamp for the forest sections.
