Oviedo → Grado
A stage of the Camino Primitivo
The opening stage of the Camino Primitivo — the oldest of all the Camino routes, dating to the 9th century — departs from Oviedo, the historic capital of Asturias, and descends 24.4 km to the small town of Grado. The elevation profile is telling: 240 metres of ascent but 409 metres of descent, as the route quickly leaves the city behind and drops into the valley of the Nalón river through forested hillsides and rural farmland. Pilgrims beginning the Primitivo are advised to spend the night before in Oviedo to visit its fine pre-Romanesque monuments and cathedral.
