Estella

Camino de Santiago stage town on Camino Francés

Estella (Lizarra in Basque) is the end of the 21.4 km stage from Puente la Reina on the Camino Francés, and few towns owe more to the pilgrimage. In 1090 King Sancho Ramírez of Navarre and Aragón granted it a founding charter and deliberately routed the pilgrim road through the new town on the Río Ega, settling it with Franks from Auvergne and Limousin. The camino enters along Calle La Rúa, lined with the town's Romanesque treasures: the 12th-century Palace of the Kings of Navarre, a rare example of Romanesque civil architecture whose façade capital shows Roland fighting the giant Ferragut (it now houses the Gustavo de Maeztu museum), and, opposite, the steep stairway up to San Pedro de la Rúa, whose cloister keeps two galleries of historiated capitals — the other two were lost when the castle above was demolished in the 16th century. Across the rebuilt Puente de la Cárcel are the Romanesque portal of San Miguel and the Gothic doorway of the Santo Sepulcro. The municipal Hospital de Peregrinos sits on Calle La Rúa at the entrance to the old town, run by the local Amigos del Camino association; other albergues are spread across both banks. Next morning, about 3 km out past Ayegui, the Irache wine fountain and the Monastery of Irache wait; Los Arcos is about 21 km on, with long stretches of few services, so carry water.
