Logroño
Camino de Santiago stage town on Camino Francés
Logroño, capital of La Rioja and home to about half the region's population, ends the long 27.6 km stage from Los Arcos via Viana. On the outskirts pilgrims pass the spot where Doña Felisa greeted walkers for decades with "figs, water and love" (she died in 2002, but her memory and stamp live on), then cross the Ebro — the first big river of the Camino Francés — on the Puente de Piedra, opened in 1884 on the site of an older bridge attributed to San Juan de Ortega. The yellow arrows then follow Ruavieja, the city's oldest street, past Santa María de Palacio with its needle-like spire, to the Plaza de Santiago: here the Fuente del Peregrino (rebuilt 1675) stands beside a giant Game of the Goose board set into the paving, its squares depicting Camino towns, and the church of Santiago el Real shows Santiago Matamoros above its door. The route leaves the old town through the 16th-century Puerta del Revellín, the old "Gate of the Camino". Just off the arrows are the co-cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda, with twin Baroque towers and a small Crucifixion attributed to Michelangelo, and the tapas bars of Calle Laurel and Calle San Juan. The municipal albergue at Ruavieja 32 (68 beds, open all year) reopened in July 2026 run by volunteer hospitaleros of the Spanish Federation of Camino associations; the parish albergue beside Santiago el Real (Barriocepo 8, about 30 places) is donativo with shared dinner and breakfast. Tomorrow is 28.5 km to Nájera through La Grajera park; Navarrete, 11.9 km on, is a shorter option.
