Los Arcos

Camino de Santiago stage town on Camino Francés

Los Arcos, about 134 km from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, ends the 20.8 km stage from Estella, a stretch with no villages after Irache, so arrivals are usually thirsty. The town grew rich on the pilgrim fuero and fairs, and belonged to the Kingdom of Castile from 1463 to 1753; its three medieval pilgrim hospitals (Santa María, Santa Brígida and San Lázaro) have passed the baton to today's albergues. The arcaded plaza is dominated by the church of Santa María de la Asunción: begun in the late 12th century and reworked until the 19th, it mixes Romanesque, Gothic, Plateresque and Baroque, with a Gothic cloister and an unusually lavish interior well worth entering if it is open. The municipal albergue Isaac Santiago (C/ San Lázaro 6, about 70 beds, about €8, roughly March–October) is known for its warm welcome and cleanliness; several private albergues stay open longer. Shops, pharmacy, ATM and health centre are in town. Next come Sansol (7.5 km) and Torres del Río (7.9 km), or Viana at 18.4 km; the local fiesta runs 14–20 August.
