Triacastela

Camino de Santiago stage town on Camino Francés

Triacastela is the first Galician town on the Camino Francés, reached after the long descent from the O Cebreiro heights. Founded in the 9th century around a Benedictine monastery by Count Gatón del Bierzo, its name recalls three castles of which no trace survives. Aimeric Picaud ends his ninth stage here in the Codex Calixtinus, and records the town's famous tradition: each pilgrim would carry a block of local limestone onward to the kilns at Castañeda, where it was fired into the lime used to build Santiago's cathedral. Today it is a practical resting point with albergues, bars and shops, and the place where pilgrims choose their route to Sarria.
